Repetitive Strain Injuries- What are they?

Commonly known as 'repetitive strain injuries' these conditions present themselves in a variety of patterns. The onset of symptoms are related to the repetitive nature of the individual's activity.

For example, a keen tennis or golf player may develop a tendon overuse syndrome- 'tennis/golfer's elbow'

A keyboard/VDU operator or violinist may develop pain in any of the following: tendons of the forearms/ tingling or numbness/ aching in the shoulders, upper arms and neck.

A swimmer may complain of shoulder pain on overhead motion of the arm.

A rock climber may experience repeated tendon/muscle injuries of the forearms.

The repetitive motion involved in each of these activities is, of course, a factor.  In addition imbalances within the musculoskeletal system are often partially to blame. In addition to providing pain relief, physiotherapy assessment seeks to find these imbalances and put them right.

How can physiotherapy help?

Exercises, ergonomics, joint and soft tissue manipulation, electrotherapy and acupuncture are methods in which Joanna qualified to assist your recovery.
