Repetitive Strain Injuries-
What are they?
Commonly known as 'repetitive strain injuries' these conditions
present themselves in a variety of patterns. The onset of symptoms are
related to the repetitive nature of the individual's activity.
For example, a keen tennis or golf player may develop a tendon overuse
syndrome- 'tennis/golfer's elbow'
A
keyboard/VDU operator or violinist may develop pain in any of the
following: tendons of the forearms/ tingling or numbness/ aching in
the shoulders, upper arms and neck.
A
swimmer may complain of shoulder pain on overhead motion of the arm.
A
rock climber may experience repeated tendon/muscle injuries of the
forearms.
The repetitive motion involved in each of these activities is, of
course, a factor. In addition imbalances within the musculoskeletal
system are often partially to blame. In addition to providing pain
relief, physiotherapy assessment seeks to find these imbalances and
put them right.
